Valentin Named Physician Assistant Studies Department Chair
Virginia L. Valentin, DrPh, PA-C, began her career in healthcare when she was hired as a nurse’s assistant at 16.
Now,
after stints as a registered nurse, physician assistant, assistant and
associate professor, and division chief, she has been named chair and
director of the Physician Assistant Studies department in the University

PA Simulation Experience Prepares Students for Real Life
Maggie Casteel Smith’s patient had trouble sleeping.
Upon
further questioning, she discovered the patient was using marijuana,
and apparently had a history of abuse as a child. What to do?
“In
my plan, I referred her to psychiatry to obtain counseling for her
past trauma,” Casteel Smith said. “As a provider, we must get to
the true root of a patient’s problem, and in this case, it seems as
though the root of my patient’s trouble sleeping was actually childhood
trauma.”

PA students Present on PA Profession
The UK Area Health Education Center hosted a group of high school
juniors and seniors on campus for their Health Careers Pathways
Program. UKPA was invited to present to the students about the
profession and program as well as conduct a hands-on suturing
activity. Six UKPA students volunteered to assist with the
suturing activity: Will Ewers (’24), Brooke Woosley (’24), Thanya
Gutierrez (’24), Jessi Bryant (’24), Onieta Stewart (’22), Jayde Preece
(’22).

Ways to Help those affected by the Eastern Kentucky floods
For Jaley Caudill, the destruction in Eastern Kentucky struck close to
home — literally. A native of Whitesburg, in Letcher County, Caudill's
home county was one of the hardest hit in last week’s historic
flooding.
Now she’s doing what she can to help.
“It’s devastating,” says the Physician Assistant Studies student,
who is currently in rotations in Lexington. “I haven’t been home, but
I’ve seen the pictures, and my friends and family say the reality is
just even worse. My husband has been back (in Whitesburg) and he said
you just can’t believe it.” READ MORE
