In 2018, Dr. Mary Lloyd Ireland and Dr. Hanna Hoch came together with an idea of improving the health of active women across the lifespan. This idea was supported by Dean Scott Lephart in the College of Health Sciences and a lead gift from Dr. Ireland. Dr. Dee Dlugonski joined the team in 2019 to direct the newly formed Active Women’s Health Initiative, which was renamed Active Girls Healthy Women in 2023.

From 2019 - 2020, the Active Girls Healthy Women Program: conducted an online survey to understand the importance of physical activity for quality of life among women led by Dr. Hanna Hoch, launched the Champions of Active Women podcast (which activity needs and preferences of community leaders who were working with youth.
