Join us for our 2nd Annual Miles in Memory running and walking challenge to remember the lives of two members of our Athletic Training community.

During the entire month of June, we will be walking and running miles in memory of Amy M. Waugh and Ellen Felice Mattacola, both of whom have designated memorial scholarships.

The Amy M. Waugh Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Amy Waugh, who served as the Practice Manager and Athletic Trainer Clinical Coordinator for the UK Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Clinic. She is an alumnus of the University of Kentucky where she earned her Bachelors of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Heath Promotion and has a Master’s of Science from the University of Florida in Sports Management.

The Ellen Felice Mattacola Scholarship supports one or more students pursuing a degree in Athletic Training. The scholarship is named for Ellen Felice Mattacola, a first-generation college graduate from a family of Italian immigrants. She was a committed life learner who earned a master's degree later in life after putting her two sons through college. Ms. Mattacola chose a career in education and touched the lives of countless elementary students. Her legacy of assisting others in pursing their educational dreams will live on through this scholarship.

By joining us in this challenge, we hope to support these scholarship funds for current students in the Athletic Training program, and to carry on the legacy of these two wonderful women. To register for the challenge, click this link, then find the tickets button in the upper right-hand corner. Registration will count as a donation and will be split between these two scholarships. If you choose to not do a spilt donation, you have the option to donate solely to the Waugh scholarship or the Mattacola scholarship. You can also purchase a t-shirt to commemorate this experience with us.

On Saturday, June 25, the Waugh Family will host a memorial walk in honor of Amy. The walk will be from 9 a.m. – noon at Bourbon County Park, Legion Road, Paris, Ky., 40361. Registration for this walk will be on site. Look for the balloons under the shelter.

We will kick off a “Most Spirited” social media contest — post your pictures with the hashtag #UKMilesInMemory, and we’ll repost them.

And in closing, we will also be hosting a morning run at the National Athletic Trainers Association 2022 convention in Philadelphia on Thursday, June 30, at 7:30 a.m. This run will take you up the iconic stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as seen in the movie Rocky II. If you plan to be in Philly for the conference, email Caroline Arthur at caroline.arthur@uky.edu and she can send you more information about the run and our UK Alumni and Friends Reception.
