Bern Notice: Bernadette Cortez hired as new CHS Director of Recruitment

By Ryan Clark

CHS Communications Director

She says her nickname is Bern.

And that’s fitting — because she’s ready to heat up the recruiting trail for the College of Health Sciences.

Bernadette Cortez

Meet Bernadette Cortez, the new director of recruitment for the College. Even though she doesn’t say y’all (Cortez is originally from southern California) she says she’s spent enough time growing up in western Kentucky that she can call the Bluegrass State home. After earning her degree in Business Administration from Murray State University, she eventually followed her brother to Lexington.

“I loved it — I loved Lexington and I loved how helpful everybody was,” she said. “I wanted to work at UK, and I originally started off in enrollment management in 2014. For a while I was at the Visitor Center as the associate director, and then I started working recruitment.”

She ended up in charge of her hometown area of western Kentucky. “I always loved feeling like I’d helped people, whether it was answering their questions or giving them information,” she said.

And get this — she also loves John Steinbeck and “Lord of the Rings.”

Here’s a handful of questions with Bernadette Cortez:

What led you to the College of Health Sciences?

My brother went into Pharmacy, and I was just fascinated by healthcare. Being here (in CHS), I could help students who had this lifelong dream — tell them about the program and tell them how to get into it.

What do you think about our recruiting — what’s working or not working?

I’d like to see some publications with a lot more photography of our campus and our students. And you have to think about how you want to deliver that message, whether it’s digital or electronic.

Of course, I’m still learning who to talk to. I think our website has gotten a lot better, and while some things can still be clearer, I think we’re in good shape. And I think we could do something more with video, which I understand we’re trying to do.

What fun do you get into when you’re not at work?

I’ve really been getting into tennis a lot, lately. Although when I hit the ball, I just hope that I make it on to the court.

I also love baseball. I’m a Dodgers fan. I can spend all night talking about it.

I also listen to true crime podcasts, and when my brother comes to town, we practice making bread.

What is your favorite movie?

“Rear Window” with Jimmy Stewart.

I also love “Gone With the Wind,” “Hello Dolly” and “Lord of the Rings.”

What is the most recent book you’ve read?

I am starting to read East of Eden.

Any music you’re listening to?

I’ll probably just put on my record player — a little Amy Winehouse, maybe? I love the way she sounds and makes me feel.

So, are you a UK fan by this point?

Since moving here, I’ve seen the Christian Laettner play over and over, and I know that we’re not supposed to like him (laughs). And I love to watch football, but I don’t really know all the rules yet.

But yes, I’d have to say I’m a big, big fan of this place.
