Kaelyn Bergman had one goal when it came to attending CHS Welcome Day.

"Meeting more people," the freshman, who is an exploratory studies major, said. "I am from Nebraska, and it seems so nice here."

Others had similar hopes for the event, where about 200 freshmen packed the Gatton Student Center Thursday afternoon and the College of Health Sciences welcomed them all to the University of Kentucky.

"So excited to meet new people in my classes and get more involved," said Ella Ison, a Human Health Sciences major on the pre-PA track from Lexington. "Especially to learn more about my pre-professional track."

Of course, there was more than just socializing taking place.

Advisers from the Office of Student Affairs and Peer Mentors spoke to the group on topics ranging from registering for classes to time management.

The overarching theme? That in CHS, someone is always there for you.

"I am so excited to see them thrive and what the year holds for each of them," said Ally Bell, a third-year Human Health Sciences major on the pre-dental track. Bell, a native of Glasgow, also serves as a College of Health Sciences Peer Mentor, as well as a chair for her sorority, is a former athlete and a participant in the Shoulder to Shoulder Global Brigade — among other things.

For Tylan Harrod, a Human Health Sciences major on the the pre-PT track from Frankfort, it all just reiterated why he made this decision in the first place.

"(I want to) meet people in my classes that aren't in my pre professional track," he said.

And on Thursday, he was able to do just that. After the presentations, the students were separated into breakout rooms, where they participated in icebreaker sessions and learned more about their new school.

Gladys Hill, a Communication Sciences and Disorders major from Cincinnati, said she is “excited for the school year and studying something I’m actually interested in, as well as meeting new people.”

Julia Borgstrom, a Human Health Sciences major on the pre-PA track from Morris, Ill., said she came to UK because she was looking for a big school.

“My mom and my sister went here and when I visited I loved the campus, the weather, and the College of Health Sciences,” she said.

And on Thursday, CHS gave all of that love right back.
