COOL FOR THE SUMMER: Interns Able to Get Outside Comfort Zone, Prepare for Future

Taylor Hill

Get uncomfortable. Learn something new. Try something different.

And do it twice.

Taylor Hill is getting used to all of this. After all, she’s an intern — two times over.

Hill, a 20-year-old Clinical Leadership and Management major from Taylorsville, Ky., has taken on two separate internships this semester, one with Mortenson Family Dental, the other with the UK Gill Heart Affiliate.

“I secured the Mortenson internship through the Clinical Leadership and Management job fair hosted this spring, and I thought it would be an incredible opportunity, so I jumped on it!” Hill said. “The UK Gill Heart Affiliate internship came from an email explaining the role and responsibilities, which sounded super interesting to me.”

So she took them. Both.

And during these opportunities, she has been able to try a lot of different tasks.

“At Mortenson, I check in patients, scan important paperwork, write in patient charts, make appointments, and call patients when needed,” she said. “I also assist the dentists if they need help with patients’ charts.

“At UK Gill Heart Affiliate, I edit many PowerPoints for their big conference in the fall. Throughout the summer, I will be working on events and initiatives with physicians, staff and administrators at UK HealthCare and hospitals throughout the state.”

While there aren’t many who take on two internships at the same time, students say interning in CLM is just another way that getting your degree in the College of Health Sciences sets you apart. And it gives further proof why those who intern go on to have further success in the future.

“I love my internships!” she said. “I have learned so much and grown significantly already. I have met some amazing people who have truly helped me develop as a professional. I get to do new things that I am not used to while making a difference in peoples’ lives.”

And what advice does Hill have for those thinking of interning?

“Interning is valuable because it helps you build your network and expand your knowledge,” she said. “It fosters professionalism and prepares you for your future career. You meet great people and get your foot in the door with the career you want.

“Interning is the best thing I could have done for myself, and I believe everyone should take the opportunity to intern!” she said.
