COOL FOR THE SUMMER: Interns earn experience, gain mentorship

By Ryan Clark

CHS Communications Director

Bailey Ratliff’s network paid off.

You see, Bailey — a 20-year-old Clinical Leadership and Management major — wanted an internship for the summer. Through a contact with her professor (Sarah Kercsmar, PhD, MHA, program director and associate professor in Clinical Leadership and Management) Bailey was able to make a connection in the Office of Corporate Compliance at UK HealthCare.

Then, she was able to interview with Landon Bray, a compliance analyst there who also just happens to be a graduate of the Clinical Leadership and Management program.

Bailey, a native of Fort Mitchell, Ky., got the gig — and loved it.

Under the supervision of Landon Bray and Noelle True, she’s been able to do things like: Assist with the OCC’s annual review of the federally mandated Open Payments Program, as well as lead a project that conducts in-depth reviews of 20 percent of disclosures, with a quicker review of the remaining 80 percent.

“I am really enjoying my internship because it allows me to get hands-on experience and explore different areas of compliance, privacy and auditing,” she said. “Also, the team is supportive, friendly and collaborative. They are always willing to answer my questions and mentor me.”

Students say interning in CLM is just another way that getting your degree in the College of Health Sciences sets you apart. And it gives further proof why those who intern go on to have further success in the future.

“Interning is rewarding as it allows you to make a meaningful impact, gain diverse skills, understand the healthcare system and offer excellent networking and leadership opportunities,” Bailey said.

Each week we'll feature another student who is participating in a summer internship.
