High Schoolers Travel to CHS for MLS Visit

Students at Elkhorn Crossing High School in Georgetown, Ky., got a fun-filled day trip last week as part of an initiative to introduce them to everything the College of Health Sciences’ Medical Laboratory Science program has to offer.
Juniors at Elkhorn (or those students in the 11th grade) were able to visit UK’s campus, meet students and faculty, and ask questions about what they can get out of a CHS education.
“The goal of the program is to expose them to many careers in biomedical sciences,” said Julye Adams, PhD, and biomedical sciences teacher at Elkhorn. “MLS is very skilled-based, and it shows that work in the classroom can be translated into college courses and even in graduate courses.”
“Not many people know what we do and that’s why we like hosting events like this,” said Steve Schwarze, PhD, MLS (ASCP), CM and Program Director for Medical Laboratory Sciences.
Current students agreed this was a good learning experiment.
“Even though it is hard, every lab we do in this major is preparing us to take care of future patients,” said Chloe Olegario, a junior Medical Laboratory Sciences major on the Pre-Med track.
