CMB Helps UK Earn No. 2 National Ranking for ‘Skeletal Muscle’ Citations and Research
Mission
The Center for Muscle Biology (CMB) was formally established in June 2008 to support and integrate basic, clinical and translational research on muscle throughout the University of Kentucky. The mission of the CMB is to catalyze research projects, strengthen grant applications to facilitate extramural funding success, and serve as a hub of interdisciplinary collaboration by engaging students, early-stage and senior investigators of various scientific backgrounds in research to understand mechanisms underlying the regulation of muscle structure and function and the impact it has on physical activity and chronic disease.
It is widely recognized that aging and chronic diseases including stroke, heart disease, liver disease, arthritis and cancer are characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting. Clinical studies have illustrated that the loss in muscle strength is often an early and strong predictor of increased mortality, as well as increased disability. Thus, our motto: Muscle powers health.
Vision
The CMB strives to foster interdisciplinary studies aimed at developing therapeutic strategies to combat muscle weakness and wasting, in concert with primary injury and disease treatment, for improved clinical outcomes with lowered mortality, shorter hospital stays, decreased hospital readmissions and increased quality of life. We envision the translation of treatment and therapeutic strategies for muscle weakness and wasting through the integration of strong bench to bedside programs.
