This residency program offers advanced training in Emergency Medicine at one of Kentucky's leading rural healthcare institutions. Designed to prepare residents for excellence in acute and rural care settings, it combines immersive clinical experiences, structured didactics, and professional development opportunities. Residents gain expertise in managing a wide range of emergency and critical care cases while developing the skills needed to thrive in underserved areas. By the end of the year, the resident will obtain a level of knowledge and skill mastery in emergency medicine to serve well on any team.
This Residency Track Offers:
- Supervised rotations emphasizing emergency medicine. Additional rotations in hospital medicine and critical care.
- Monthly lectures, asynchronous modules, and resources like Foundations of Emergency Medicine and Academic Life in Emergency Medicine University (ALiEMU).
- Hands-on training in critical procedures such as cardiac pacing, thoracostomy, cricothyrotomy, dislocation reduction, bedside ultrasound, intubation, and lumbar puncture.
- Opportunities to practice rural medicine with full scope of practice.
- Experience living in Morehead, Kentucky, near Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest.
Rotation Template (12 Months):
- Emergency Medicine (8 months): Core rotations managing medical, surgical, and traumatic emergencies
- Hospital Medicine (1 month): Inpatient care, including admissions, consults, and multidisciplinary collaboration
- Medical ICU (1 month): Advanced critical care training, focusing on sepsis, ventilator management, procedures, and cardiac resuscitation
- Perioperative/Postoperative Medicine (1 month): Skills in anesthesia management, intubation, and surgical patient care
- Elective (1 month): Specializations may include diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, neurology, cardiology, or other subspecialties.
