Communication Sciences and Disorders Undergraduate Course Work
To receive a Bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in Communication Sciences and Disorders, a student must complete courses that fulfill the UK CORE requirements, and all required CSD and Related Studies courses. Please see your CHS advisor for details on the timing and sequence of courses to take BEFORE application to the CSD undergraduate major.
CSD major courses are organized in a sequential manner based on the content needed to successfully manage classes that come later in the sequence. Therefore, CSD major courses cannot be taken outside the order outlined below.
PRE-MAJOR CSD COURSES - Optional and Open to All UK Students
- CSD 120 - Careers in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (1 cr.)
REQUIREMENTS BEFORE APPLICATION
- PSY 100 - Intro to Psych (4 cr.) or equivalent by transfer from another university or AP credit
- CSD 277 - Introduction to Communication Sciences & Disorders (3 cr.)
- Completion of 42 credit hours or more before your application to the CSD undergraduate program
BASIC SCIENCE PRINCIPLES - Listed courses are REQUIRED by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for future professional certification.
- One 3-credit course in the Biological Sciences
- One 3-credit course in the Physical Sciences - (Must be a Physics OR Chemistry course)
- One 3-credit course in Social Sciences - [Satisfied by PSY 100-Intro to Psych (4 cr.) or equivalent]
- Any 3-credit Statistics course - (STA 210 preferred)

RELATED STUDIES REQUIREMENT
- One 3-credit course in Linguistics (such as: LIN 211, 212, 221, 310, 317, 509) - LIN course may be taken before admission
- LIN 221 is the preferred course for CSD undergraduate majors
*UK CORE Requirements will usually satisfy the ASHA basic sciences standards. Please see the Director of Undergraduate Studies for exact details and specifics of these major requirements. ASHA Standard IV-A states that the student must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and the social/behavioral sciences. Applicants must have transcript credit (can include coursework, advanced placement, CLEP, or examination of equivalency in each of these areas).
